2 New Youth Foyers in Victoria!
We are thrilled with the Victorian Government’s recent announcement to invest $50 million into youth housing, including two new Youth Foyers in #Wangaratta and #Wodonga.
More than 16 per cent of people experiencing homelessness in Victoria are aged between 15 to 24. Youth Foyers are an evidence-based solution to this issue, providing a young people with a safe and stable home and integrated learning and employment supports for up to two years.
With these new announcements, more young people in Wangaratta and Wodonga will have a pathway to overcome disadvantage and unlock thriving, independent futures.
These new Youth Foyers are developed after a strong track record of success in other communities across Victoria including Glen Waverley, Shepparton, Lilydale, Warrnambool and Broadmeadows.
Independent analysis found that over 80% of young people living in a Youth Foyer exit into safe and stable housing with increased levels of engagement in education and employment.
Thanks to the Minister for Housing, Colin Brooks, for his commitment to addressing this urgent issue for our next generation; “We are addressing youth homelessness and this investment ensures that commitment continues and helps to give young people a place to call home.”
The pressure is now on for governments in other states and territories to respond to the needs of young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness and their communities. Over 33 communities are seeking investment for new Youth Foyers right now.
The Foyer Foundation and our partners have formed the FoyerInvest consortium to accelerate the growth of the Youth Foyer movement to 50 Foyers by 2030 in response to this demand. We have developed an innovative funding solution that brings together private capital with Federal and state/territory funding to invest in new Youth Foyers.
We welcome engagement from other state and territory governments to find sustainable avenues to fund more Youth Foyers across Australia.
