Mission Australia opened Australia’s newest Youth Foyer in Townsville in June 2024, welcoming 40 young people from Townsville and surrounding communities. The third Youth Foyer to be built in Queensland will support up to 350 young people over the next 10 years.
In Townsville, over 55% of all young people experiencing homelessness are First Nations young people. The Townsville Youth Foyer provides an important part of the local service system, working with community partners to create pathways to independence for young people in the region.
“They’ve definitely given me the space I need to find out what I wanted to do… and to have that space to live independently as well. I want to get my study up in construction and I want to help build Youth Foyers for the future. To give people happiness and something to look forward to.” Elma, one of the new residents of Townsville Youth Foyer.
The launch of the Foyer was attended by Premier Steven Miles, Queensland Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon, and many of our Queensland FoyerInvest partners, community organisations and had a strong media presence. Former residents of the Logan Youth Foyer, Claire and Livi, shared their wisdom and experiences with new Foyer residents, inspiring everyone in attendance.
